IS IT A NEW OR EXISTING BUSINESS?
Urban Ummah is a new business but Islamically, not a new concept.

WHAT IS THE NAME OF THE BUSINESS?
Urban Ummah LTD
WHAT IS THE BUSINESS/IDEA?
Urban Ummah aims to raise awareness of Fairtrade, organic, ethical and environmental issues that all Muslims should be aiming to participate in as a religious duty.
WHEN WAS THE BUSINESS ESTABLISHED?
Early 2007
WHAT ARE THEY CURRENTLY DOING? I.E. WORK, KIDS ETC
We are also graphic designers and run a company called Divine Dizine (www.divinedizine.co.uk). We started out doing work for free for local Masjids and madrassas but gradually the interest developed. Most noticeably we produced the art work for children’s Islamic stories for a world famous scholar and an Islamic prep’ school. We are also currently running a non profit project called Open Islam (www.open-islam.com) where the aim is to provide an up to date website where all Islamic events held in Bradford are displayed, including classes, bayaans, and talks and will feature an information section on all the Mosques that participate. Information will include details such as whether a mosque has women’s facilities, parking or Khutbahs in English for example. We are also working on an Islamically inspired comic book series aimed at teaching moral and religious values to our little ummah. The comic is entitled ‘Adam and his Android’ and will feature curriculum levels and key stages to help parents educate their youngsters.
HOW IS THE GRID HELPING THEM?
The GRID have been useful as a sounding board and to gain general business advice. They have also linked us up with useful organisations.
WHAT FUTURE ASPIRATIONS DO THEY HAVE?
We hope to be ‘major players’ in the Islamic link to Fairtrade and environmental issues and to address the misconceptions of Islam currently held by Non Muslims and Muslims alike. Business wise, we would like to see Urban Ummah develop into a brand that caters for every member of the family when it comes to garments, education and lifestyle.
