MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: Pluto Media

N513129554_133442_2264What is your business?
Pluto Media helps businesses to increase sales, increase profits, and enhance their reputation by improving communication with potential clients.  We do this by producing video content, specialising in content for the web.

What influenced you to set up this business?

After graduating from a Media degree at Bradford University last summer, I decided to set up my own production company.  I felt that if I didn’t try it then, I never would!

What challenges/goals are you currently facing?

Finding regular income streams is our biggest challenge at the moment.  With our business, we tend to do larger projects, rather than lot of smaller sales.  This makes planning difficult, as we don’t know when the big projects are going to come in.  We’re currently looking at setting up smaller ‘products’, which will help us have a more steady income.

Your greatest moment:
There’s been so many great moments!  The most rewarding moments for me are when our clients refer us onto their own contacts.  When someone calls us and said ‘we heard about the great job you did for…”.  I find it very satisfying knowing that we have produced something which people are so happy with that they recommend it to others.

Your worst moment:
There has only been once occasion when we have not been able to complete a project on time.  We had some serious technical problems, and I worked solidly through a bank holiday weekend to try and get it done.  Not delivering what was expected felt really bad.

What is the best advice you have ever received?

You can do anything you want, as long as you have the right attitude!

And the worst?

You have to be ruthless to make it in business.

What is one of your special talents?

As well as the technical and creative side of video production, I feel my personal talents, and those of the company, are getting the best out of people.  Relating to people from different backgrounds is so important.  Over the last year, we’ve worked with a wide variety of people, and I love that fact that no two days are the same – each new project brings its own challenges and opportunities.

What is your definition of success?

Being happy.  It doesn’t matter how much money you have, where you live, or how successful your business is.  Learning to be happy in any situation is my definition of success!

If you could go back in time and witness one event in history what would it be and why?

Martin Luther King’s “I have a dream” speech.  It must’ve been an amazing thing to witness.

What is your pet hate
General rudeness!

And if you could have dinner with two people (living or not) who would they be?

Ian Curtis and Jesus.

Member Spotlight:David Chilvers DC Mortgages

 Dcm_logo005

Hi David, WELCapture31COME to the Grid*!

What is your business? DC Mortgage Services. Providing mortgages to residential and commercial clients. Providing advice to individuals and businesses on personal and business insurance protection.

What influenced yo
u to set up this business? After being in industry for over 40 years I decided I needed a change.  I relished the thought of the challenge ahead and being the master of my own destiny

What challenges/goals are you currently facing?
As you are aware the housing market is stagnant at the moment and as a result mortgage clients are hard to find. I have to diversify to survive. I have done this to good effect.

Your greatest moment: Landing a client who wanted a £3 million pound mortgage and providi
ng that mortgage.

Your worst moment: Facing up to the reality that the new business I had created, DC Mortgages, could not survive on mortgages alone. Having just moved into new offices it was scary.

What is the best advice you have ever received?
The past is for refere
nce not for residence.

And the worst? Just send out these e-mails and letters and the work will come flooding in. Oh YEAH !!

What is one of your special talents? The ability to save clients money by doing regular financial reviews.

What is your definition of success? Avoiding work by loving what I do.

If you could go back in time and witness one event in history what would it be and why? The building of the Pyramids.  Just how did they move those massive stones to the top? I want to be up there too !!

What is your pet hate. Limp handshakes

And if you could have dinner with
two people (living or not) who would they be? Les Dawson and Ken Dodd

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: Jonathon Smith- CSC

Logocsc Hi Jonathon, WELCOME to the GRID!

IS YOUR BUSINESS A NEW OR EXISTING ONE?

We are an existing business

WHAT IS THE NAME OF YOUR BUSINESS?
CS Communicate Ltd

WHAT DOES YOUR BUSINESS DO?
We are a marketing and design business, as our name suggests our aim is to help people communicate clearly and effectively with their customers – past, present and future.

WHEN WAS IT ESTABLISHED?
1991

WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY DOING?
We work with a range of companies, mainly SME’s helping them develop their marketing ideas and in many cases seeing them through to developing marketing products, from business cards to websites – with quite a bit in between. We are also proud to be suppliers or ‘Professional Marketing Services’ to the Bradford Kickstart Programme.

Photo_3 HOW IS THE GRID HELPING YOU? Be kind!!
Our friends at the Grid have been very helpful and we are looking forward to working even closer, we have already worked together through the Wednesday lunchtime networking meetings and recently presented a 20 minute ‘Rough Guide to Marketing’ training session for them. We are also in talks to further develop these training sessions to focus on other specific marketing topics too.

WHAT FUTURE ASPIRATIONS DO YOU HAVE?
We want to be at the heart of the initiatives that are currently driving Bradford’s development forward and to play our part in ensuring that all the people of Bradford have the opportunity to move forward with it.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO GO INTO BUSINESS?
We went into business because we thought it would be more enjoyable and productive working for ourselves. Generally it is, though at times it’s both frustrating and very hard work and when it’s your own business it can be hard to switch off at times. On balance though we’re not complaining and we’ve made some lasting friendships as a result too. In terms of support, I would have to say that there is a lot more support about nowadays than there was when we started out, and the quality of it is much improved too. Also working through an incubation unit means you have access to fellow start-up business people and advisors who can really help and point you in the right direction. It’s the fool who doesn’t ask for help, and very few fools last long in business.

You can contact Jonathon on 01274 532715 or 07887 580 085 or email jon@cscommunicate.co.uk or visit www.cscommuniate.co.uk for further information, you can also just look him up on the GRID!

Member Spotlight:Be proactive with Pro-Active Sports

Rowland and Bobby met working for the council employed as sport coaches, going into schools that were backed by a government funded project.

When the role came to an end both went out as freelance sports coaches in schools. Meeting again, the penny dropped that they were better joining forces. After some market research interviewing head teachers, learning mentors, parent involvement officers, PE co-ordinators and questionnaire for children. The response was overwhelming from all areas and also that the children would benefit, especially as the schools were not paying for the service. The support from schools was that they would find the funds to ensure the service was offered.

Pro-active Sports was established in April 2006 where they started off in few schools, soon having to employ staff and train coaches to cover schools in the Yorkshire area, currently employing 10 coaches Yorkshire wide and have another batch coming through.

Naomi from Make your Mark in Wakefield nominated Pro-Active Sports for the Enterprising Young Brits Award. The boys hadn’t even given it a second thought, until they received a call stating that they had been short listed in the Social and Environmental category out of thousands that had been nominated and had been placed in the finals, they won the award that was given to them.

Proactive_sports Bobby Singh & Rowland Egege Enterprising Young  Brits – Make Your Mark – November 2006.

They were also asked to attend The Yorkshire Enterprise & diversity convention 2006 – Enterprise award

"We attended a enterprising debate on the 1st day, 2nd day, we did a presentation to panel of 9 judges.

This just made their business more credible, they received a lot of publicity, Daily Mail, there profile was raised and "people started taking us seriously as a business." The award was presented by Gordon Brown.

Yorkshire Enterprise and Diversity Awards – nominated for many awards since and runners up and nominated for Vision awards and short listed.

Rowland has always been good at sports and wanted to do sports when he was at school, teachers had said do something that you wanted to do and enjoyed. He'd questioned what he was good at, "I played football at a high standard." Rowland completed a Leisure & recreation course and loved it, then Level 1 football whivh he found easy. He went to school for work experience at Springwood Primary and did a 1hr sports session. The teacher had asked if he'd done it before, "they encouraged me and almost planted the seed.' He then received his level 2 football.

Bobby – "I’ve always been good at sports main topic at school." Bobby attended Park Lane College completing a BTec National in Sports Science, then Carnegie, Leeds Metropolitan University, BSC Honours in Physical Activity Exercise and Health, the facilities absolutely fantastic. "I always wanted to be a PE teacher", he worked for Abbey National, when the council job came up. Met Rowland, did not go back to do the PGCE.

Which two people would you like to have dinner with alive or dead:

"I’d have to say three says Rowland: Michael Jackson – first black superstar, Beckham – top man , I love football as my first passion and I have to really have to take my hat off to him. And thirdly, the best moment of my life was receiving the Enterprise Awards, I wish my father was alive so he could see what I’ve achieved.

Bobby says "Mohammed Ali – greatest role model and Princes Diana - she was always a very caring person and gave up so much of her time to helping others less fortunate than herself.

If you think your City or School could benefit from the services of Pro-Active Sports, get in touch:  ProActive Sports at www.proactive-sports.co.uk

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: Urban Ummah

IS IT A NEW OR EXISTING BUSINESS?
Urban Ummah is a new business but Islamically, not a new concept.

Black_kung_fu_muslim_copy_2
WHAT IS THE NAME OF THE BUSINESS?
Urban Ummah LTD

WHAT IS THE BUSINESS/IDEA?
Urban Ummah aims to raise awareness of Fairtrade, organic, ethical and environmental issues that all Muslims should be aiming to participate in as a religious duty.

WHEN WAS THE BUSINESS ESTABLISHED?
Early 2007

WHAT ARE THEY CURRENTLY DOING? I.E. WORK, KIDS ETC
We are also graphic designers and run a company called Divine Dizine (www.divinedizine.co.uk). We started out doing work for free for local Masjids and madrassas but gradually the interest developed. Most noticeably we produced the art work for children’s Islamic stories for a world famous scholar and an Islamic prep’ school.  We are also currently running a non profit project called Open Islam (www.open-islam.com) where the aim is to provide an up to date website where all Islamic events held in Bradford are displayed, including classes, bayaans, and talks and will feature an information section on all the Mosques that participate. Information will include details such as whether a mosque has women’s facilities, parking or Khutbahs in English for example.  We are also working on an Islamically inspired comic book series aimed at teaching moral and religious values to our little ummah. The comic is entitled ‘Adam and his Android’ and will feature curriculum levels and key stages to help parents educate their youngsters.

HOW IS THE GRID HELPING THEM?
The GRID have been useful as a sounding board and to gain general business advice.  They have also linked us up with useful organisations.

WHAT FUTURE ASPIRATIONS DO THEY HAVE?

We hope to be ‘major players’ in the Islamic link to Fairtrade and environmental issues and to address the misconceptions of Islam currently held by Non Muslims and Muslims alike. Business wise, we would like to see Urban Ummah develop into a brand that caters for every member of the family when it comes to garments, education and lifestyle.
